Billing Specialist

Department: Data Processing/Billing
Location: Syracuse, NY

Position Description:

The Billing Specialist's role entails ensuring the precise and prompt processing of claims, monthly billing, and the diligent collection and research of outstanding accounts receivable balances. The Billing Specialist will be client-focused to assist them with any billing-related issues.

Performance Responsibilities and Standards:

  1. Review claims to ensure accuracy and completeness, rectifying any missing or erroneous information as necessary.
  2. Compile and dispatch claims to relevant payors within the specified timeframe outlined in the department's billing schedule.
  3. Collaborating with patients or clients, third party institutions, and other team members to resolve billing inconsistencies and errors.
  4. Investigate and address routine billing discrepancies promptly to facilitate timely claims submission.
  5. Investigate and reprocess unpaid claims as needed to optimize collections.
  6. Record payments accurately and promptly, maintaining a 100% accuracy rate.
  7. Enforce collections procedures in accordance with agency policies.
  8. Maintain regular communication with the Billing Manager regarding billing, payment, and collections matters.
  9. Utilize agency IT systems proficiently to fulfill job responsibilities.
  10. Attend mandatory meetings and workshops as required.
  11. Foster open communication and a collaborative team approach to agency planning and problem-solving.
  12. Provide exemplary customer service characterized by courtesy, responsiveness, respectfulness, and comprehensive knowledge.
  13. Perform all other job duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma; Associates degree preferred in related field.
  2. 2 or more years’ experience in the healthcare industry
  3. Strong computer literacy and comfort, ability, and desire to advance technically and understand industry standards.
  4. Proven analytical and problem-solving skills to identify potential issues and participate in their resolution.
  5. Proficiency with computer systems, working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Internet, and various software applications.
  6. Demonstrates ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team and possesses the ability to adapt to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines.
  7. Demonstrates discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information to maintain HIPAA compliance.
  8. This role requires you to report in person to the Nascentia Corporate office Monday- Friday 8am-4:30pm.
  9. Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand at a desk 90% of the day.
  • Visual/hearing ability sufficient to comprehend written or verbal communication.
  • Ability to express self verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use telephone and communicate over the phone.
  • Frequently uses a laptop computer to enter orders and obtain product information
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Category III - Employee who rarely has contact with blood and body fluids
